If you’re planning on a backpacking trip, you’ll want to plan to bring along the best backpacking essentials so that you’ll be prepared for anything. This list should help you to pack your backpack for your next adventure.
Map or Compass
While your phone has GPS and Google Maps when you are backpacking you maybe off the grid. And thus your phone won’t be able to help you.
You’ll need these for finding your way so be sure that you know how to read a map and read a compass.
Sunscreen
Many backpacking trips are taken in the mountains. The sun’s rays are very hot and can burn you easily. Apply sunscreen (even on cloudy days).
Sunglasses
Protect your eyes from the rays of the sun and wear some sunglasses.
Insulation
Always bring along some extra clothing. You’ll want extra socks, a sweatshirt and perhaps a change of shirt and pants in case you happen to fall into a river or creek or in case you’re cold you can add an extra layer of clothing.
Flashlight
You’ll want a good reliable flashlight. Make sure that it’s sturdy so that you can rely on it when you need it.
First Aid Kit
Be sure to pack some kind of a first aid kit in case you need it.
Waterproof Matches
You can’t start a fire without a spark so be sure that you have some waterproof matches.
Emergency Repair Kit
Be sure to have some sort of emergency repair kit with you. You may have to modify something on your pack or on your boots. It doesn’t have to weigh a lot but do have one on hand.
Food
Pack some nutritious lightweight food so that you can fuel your body.
Water
You will need water. Many people plan out a route that will allow them to refill a water container often.
Shelter
Consider a tarp that you can tie up between some trees or a small backpacking tent.
Bug Spray or Cream
Don’t let the bugs get the best of you.
Whistle
If you’re lost in the woods you’ll want something to attract attention.
Walking Stick
An old ski pole works well as a walking stick and the pokey end will help you if you’re on a steep hill.
Cell Phone
You may or may not have cell phone reception, but if you’re lost you can use it for a variety of things and searchers may be able to get enough of a signal to ping your location.
You could also take a two-way radio if you’re going to be with a party of more than just yourself.
Mirror
Use a small woman’s compact mirror as a signal device should you get lost. You can use it to reflect the sun to help someone find you.
Experience
Your backpacking trip should be well thought out and you should have the experience to find your way and take care of yourself in an emergency situation.
If you’ve never been backpacking before, be sure that you go with someone that has or that you are just taking shorter trips until you’ve gained the knowledge and experience of a pro.
